Rodney Purvis, a North Carolina native who is a key piece of coach Mark Gottfried’s 2012 recruiting class at NC State, will not make the European trip scheduled for the Wolfpack this month, the school announced Saturday.

In a release, the school explained that, as the NCAA Eligibility Center continues to review Purvis’ case, the 6-4 guard will stay home during NC State’s 10-day trip.

In compliance with NCAA rules, incoming freshmen must complete the review process before participating in foreign trips with their team during the summer.

The Eligibility Center has Purvis’ case under “extended review” because he was a part of the first graduating class at Upper Room Christian Academy (N.C.).

“Obviously the timing is not ideal,” head coach Mark Gottfried said in a release. “I’m disappointed he will not travel Sunday. He could join us once the process is completed, but my primary focus is making sure Rodney is ready to pursue his goals at NC State over the next four years.”

Purvis was originally committed to Louisville, but decommitted and pledged his name to NC State this past fall.

He joins guard Tyler Lewis and forward TJ Warren to round out the three-man class joining the Wolfpack in 2012-13. All three were McDonald’s All-Americans this past year.

NC State finished 24-13 this past season, including 9-7 in the ACC. Gottfried & Co. made a surprise run to the Sweet 16 before being eliminated by Kansas.

Gottfried is also dealing with the injured knee of guard Lorenzo Brown, a situation which he says the team is being “conservative” about, with the goal of being healthy by the start of the season.
