Biking used to be my favorite form of exercise. I liked the fact that I could actually get somewhere while I was doing it. Over time, however, it started to seem more and more dangerous, and now that I live out in the countryside, miles from a bike path, I’ve given it up entirely.

(OK, I admit it, I’m just lazy).

Jim Calhoun is infinitely more gutsy than I am, as he has proven by riding a bike well into his twilight years. Unfortunately, he’s also proven my cowardly side to be correct, as he keeps getting hurt while promenading his velocipede.

I can’t really tell the story any better than the Associated Press:

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun fractured his hip in a bicycle accident Saturday hours before he was supposed to coach in a charity game.

Associated head coach George Blaney says the 70-year-old Calhoun was cycling in Madison when he hit some sand and fell. Calhoun was scheduled to have surgery at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.

Calhoun broke several ribs in an accident during a charity bicycle ride in 2009.

He has led Connecticut to three NCAA titles.

The charity event at Mohegan Sun benefits the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the UConn Health Center.

In brief, this is really, really not a good season for UConn men’s hoops.
