Colorado State, Ball State pop future guards

Among the more notable verbal commitments that occurred among numerous pledges during the 48 hour period following the close of the evaluation period are guards picked up by Ball State and Colorado State.

At 5-9, point guard Zavier Turner perhaps wasn’t best suited for the high-major level, but his talent has allowed him to have prominent roles on some of the top grassroots basketball teams for the past several summers. It’s reasonable to assume that Turner will compete for heavy minutes early on, and may have even landed an offer had he waited. Instead, Turner apparently knows the level he’s best suited for, and his addition for the Ball State is significant.

Also, Colorado State landed a commitment from David Cohn, a 6-3 guard that comes from one of the top club basketball teams in the country, the Illinois Wolves. A solid shooter and scorer, Cohn is the second recruit that the new coaching staff for the Rams has been able to lock up in the 2013 recruiting class. He’s played against some of the top competition in the country over the last summer, and more than held his own.

Like Turner, Cohn likely could have ended up in a BCS conference, depending on how far he wanted to push his recruitment. Players like Turner and Cohn are worth keeping an eye on, as each has the talent to be a building block in a solid mid-major program, and eventually a contributor in a NCAA tournament run, provided they are surrounded with other similar or better talent.
