UNLV assistant Stacey Augmon turns down Charlotte Bobcats offer, will stay with Rebels

Stacey Augmon UNLV

After reportedly considering an offer to become an assistant under coach Mike Dunlap with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats, UNLV assistant Stacey Augmon is staying put with the Rebels, Matt Youmans of the Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting.

This past season was Augmon’s first with UNLV, part of a staff that helped the Rebels to a 26-9 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Augmon played his college ball at UNLV before being drafted with the ninth overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. He went on to play 15 seasons in the NBA, averaging 8.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

With news that he will be returning to the UNLV bench, he rejoins a team that will be one of the deepest in the country after a stellar recruiting class comes to the team from the Class of 2012.

Top 10 player Anthony Bennett leads the group, having committed to the Rebels in the spring, along with Katin Reinhardt, Demetris Morant, DaQuan Cook, late signee Savon Goodman, and transfers Khem Birch, Bryce Jones, and Roscoe Smith.

There will likely be a player red-shirted and Birch is eligible for the second semester.

Add that to returner Mike Moser and the Rebels are in a good position in the conference and on the national landscape.
