Anthony Bennett is the stud in what has turned into a loaded recruiting class for the UNLV Rebels.
But according to Ryan Greene of VegasSeven.com, Anthony Bennett was not one of the four freshmen that enrolled in summer school classes on Thursday.
The 6-foot-7 McDonalds All-American is expected to team up with Mike Moser -- and the six other talented forwards that Dave Rice has on his roster -- to give UNLV one of the most talented front lines in the country, but as of now Bennett is still in his native Toronto. He’s graduated from high school and been admitted to UNLV, but he’s waiting on the NCAA’s Clearinghouse to push him through.
From Greene:“Anthony has been admitted to UNLV,” Rice said. “We are submitting all the documents that the NCAA Eligibility Center needs to certify him.”
Sources with knowledge of the situation remain confident that Bennett will ultimately be cleared by the NCAA in time for the fall semester. Because Bennett attended multiple high schools and is an international student who attended school in both the U.S. and Canada, he is subject to additional review by the NCAA.
The worst news here is that Bennett likely won’t be able to participate in the Canadian tour that UNLV will be taking in August or in their 10 practices leading up to the trip. NCAA rules stipulate that a player must have completed summer courses in order to participate.
As long as Bennett gets cleared in time for the games that count, I’m sure that UNLV fans will be ok with that.
