Texas Southern head coach Tony Harvey resigns

Tony Harvey has resigned as Texas Southern’s head basketball coach, effectively immediately.

The university “determined that it was in his personal and professional interest to resign to pursue other goals,” according to a statement.

Harvey took over a team in 2008 that went 7-25, but he built a strong enough program that TSU finished third in the SWAC this season and advanced all the way to the conference’s title game.

“It’s hurtful and it’s disappointing, but the visions have to be shared and we’re just not on the same page with some things,” Harvey said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. Harvey also told FOX 26 that he was not interested in sharing the reason for his departure, saying “I think the reasons in due time, I think they’ll come out and then they’ll get addressed.”

The last time we heard from Harvey, it was after his house was burglarized by two former TSU players. They took $500,000 worth of jewelry and other valuables, according to the Houston Chronicle.
