Northwestern lands its highest-rated prospect in a decade

If Northwestern ever makes the NCAA tournament – it’s one of five that haven’t made it and have played hoops since the tourney began in 1939 – 7/2/2012 might go down as the day it finally got the final boost.

Jaren Sina, a 6-2 point guard from New Jersey, committed to the Wildcats on Monday, giving them their highest-rated recruit since 2004. The 2013 prospect originally committed to Alabama, but re-opened his commitment last October. He choose Northwestern over Rutgers, Seton Hall, Pitt and Virginia.

Sina’s important for more than his obvious talents, too. He could be one of those players that helps convince others choose Northwestern.

From Dave Telep:

Sure, Sina’s commitment is significant because of his standing in the Class of 2013, but to the Northwestern staff, it’s a gift that gives at least twice. The July period for coaches opens this weekend and a commitment from Sina allows Carmody to cross off all his other options at point guard, which was a big need. Now, he doesn’t have to focus on Sina so much and can evaluate players for other positions. Essentially, Sina committing now gives the staff extra time to spend chasing other players.

“They really want some guys to follow [me],” Sina said. “They’re trying to get more guys and talent. I know they’re looking for a small forward so that’s the next thing they want. They needed a point guard and hopefully by committing in July some guys will follow in my steps.”

But who knows? By the time Sina steps on Northwestern’s campus, the Wildcats may be coming off an NCAA tournament appearance. But let’s not count on it.
