Providence freshman guard Kris Dunn to undergo shoulder surgery, could miss entire season

Ed Cooley has done a lot in a short time to put Providence back on the road to the NCAA tournament, but his plan took a step back Tuesday morning.

According to multiple reports, star freshman guard Kris Dunn will undergo shoulder surgery and will miss up to five months, which would keep him on the sidelines until December.

Because of that, Cooley might then consider redshirting the Top 30 recruit.

“I have a torn labrum,” Dunn told the TheDay.com. “I’ve got a fracture in my bone. It happened during the NFA game during the ECC tournament (on March 1). I got fouled hard and I kind of dislocated it a little bit and it popped back in real quickly.

"… I went to a couple trainers and physical therapists and they said it was just bruised. So I just kept playing on it and I thought it would go away if I just iced it, and it didn’t.”

Dunn, in combination with fellow top recruit Ricardo Ledo, is a building block for the Providence program as they try to improve upon a 15-17 season, which included 4-14 in the Big East.

Cooley has done a great deal to change the culture at Providence in his short time with the program, reenergizing a fan base that hasn’t seen an NCAA tournament appearance since 2004.

If Dunn were to miss the entire season, it could set Cooley’s plan back, but expect the Friars to stay on the right path under his watch.
