A former Baylor basketball player has been arrested for trying to extort Robert Griffin III.

Richard Khamir Hurd played four seasons as a walk-on for the Bears, averaging a career-high of 4.0 points as a freshman. But according to KWTX, Hurd was arrested on Friday night:

A former Baylor basketball player was being held in the McLennan County Jail Monday awaiting an initial appearance in federal magistrate’s court after his arrest in connection with an alleged attempt to extort Baylor Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

FBI agents arrested Richard Khamir Hurd Friday night and brought him back to Waco.

He was in the McLennan County Jail on Monday morning under a federal detainer awaiting bond.

FBI Special Agent Eric Vasys said by telephone Monday he could not comment on the arrest until after Hurd’s appearance in court.

The only other detail that we know right now is that Hurd has since been released from jail. What, exactly, Hurd was holding over RGIII’s head is unclear. But one thing we do know is that young athletes need to be careful who they trust.UPDATE: From the Washington Times:

According to an affidavit by FBI special agent John Truehitt, Hurdcontacted an agency based in St. Louis, Missouri, on June 18 and claimed to have “derogatory information” on one of its clients. If Hurdwere not paid a “substantial sum of money,” he threatened to release the information to the media.

The affidavit identified the agency’s representative by his agency’s location and initials, B.D. Both match Griffin’s agent, Ben Dogra ofCreative Artists Agency.

“The agency” played along with the request, the affidavit said, and a representative, identified as B.S., met Hurd in Waco on June 22. Hurdsigned a nondisclosure agreement, gave B.S. the “derogatory information” and received a check.
