Future Memphis Tiger Shaq Goodwin scores 30 points in US rout of Virgin Islands

Shaq Goodwin

On Saturday afternoon, Memphis got a glimpse of the kind of player it will be welcoming to campus this coming season, as 2012 forward Shaq Goodwin scored 30 points on 12-of-12 shooting in a U18 United States National Team rout of the Virgin Islands at the FIBA Americas championships.

Goodwin was perfect from the line, too, going 6-for-6 and also adding six rebounds.

The 6-8, 245-pound native of Decatur, Ga., is one of three players signed to coach Josh Pastner’s team from the Class of 2012, along with forward Damien Wilson and guard Geron Johnson.

This past season at Southwest Dekalb (Ga.), Goodwin averaged 20 points and 11.1 rebounds for a team that finished 22-10 on the season.

He is a physically gifted forward who instantly adds size to the Memphis frontcourt for a team that doesn’t have a great deal of bulk on the block.

As for other top prospects who performed well in the United States’ 105-42 win over the Virgin Islands, Tennessee forward Jarnell Stokes added 19 points and 2013 prospect Julius Randle had 12.

Stokes and Goodwin have played for the same AAU program in the past, Memphis YOMCA.

Stokes also happens to be the only player on the roster with college experience, having made the SEC All-Freshman team after joining the Volunteers mid-season.

The United States takes on Mexico at 1 p.m. ET Sunday and can be streamed live here.
