According to the New Haven Register former Rhode Island guard Keith Cothran is making strides in his recovery from a gunshot wound suffered on May 31.

Cothran was sitting alone in his car when his vehicle was riddled with bullets, one of which hit him in the head (but wasn’t a direct hit).

Cothran was able to walk to a nearby gas station to get help, and the incident remains under investigation.

“He’s fought back pretty (well),” said a source close to Cothran, who didn’t want to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the situation. “Health-wise, he’s great. He sees everything, remembers everything, he’s walking real well.”

Cothran cousin, T.J. Mathis, was shot and killed in New Haven last September, and the question has been asked as to whether or not the two incidents are related.

While it remains unknown as to whether or not Cothran will be able to play again (having played professionally in Iceland this past season), the New Haven native has been able to overcome adversity in the past.

As a youngster Cothran spent some time in a juvenile detention facility, going on to turn his life around and star at Hillhouse HS before playing at URI and also earning a degree in sociology.

Below is a story on Cothran that was done during his senior year in Kingston.
