USA U18 roster cut from 23 to 14; two more to be cut this weekend

On Thursday night USA Basketball cut its pool of players for the U18 team from 23 players to 14, with the final 12 heading to Brazil to compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championships from June 16-20.

The 14 remaining players are:

Nathaniel Britt, II (Gonzaga H.S., D.C./Upper Marlboro, Md.)
Sam Dekker
(Sheboygan Lutheran H.S./Sheboygan, Wis./Wisconsin)
Shaq Goodwin (Southwest DeKalb H.S./Decatur, Ga./Memphis)
Jerami Grant (DeMatha Catholic/Bowie, Md./Syracuse)
Montrezl Harrell (Hargrave Military Academy/Tarboro, N.C./Louisville)
Joel James (Dwyer H.S./West Palm Beach, Fla./North Carolina)
Jake Layman (King Phillip Regional H.S./Wrentham, Mass./Maryland)
Austin Nichols (Briarcrest H.S./Eads, Tenn.)
Rodney Purvis (Upper Room Christian/Raleigh, N.C./NC State)
Julius Randle (Prestonwood Christian Academy/ McKinney, Texas)
James Robinson (DeMatha Catholic H.S./Mitchellville, Md./Pittsburgh)
Marcus Smart (Marcus H.S./Flower Mound, Texas/Oklahoma State)
Jarnell Stokes (Memphis, Tenn./Tennessee)
Rasheed Sulaimon (Strake Jesuit College Prep/Houston, Texas/Duke)

Three of the remaining 14 players will be seniors in high school next fall, led by the second-ranked player in the 2013 class Julius Randle.

Two other highly-touted recruits, twins Andrew and Aaron Harrison, were among the nine players who did not make it past the first cut.

Florida head coach Billy Donovan will coach the U18 team in Brazil with Gonzaga’s Mark Few and VCU’s Shaka Smart serving as his assistants.
