Louisville forward Stephan Van Treese will transfer, freeing up scholarship for Montrezl Harrell

Louisville forward Stephan Van Treese is transferring and has been granted his release, Evan Daniels of Scout.com is reporting.

Van Treese sat out all but three games last season after injuring his left knee in practice in late November. He averaged 2.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in just over 13 minutes per game in 2010-11 as a sophomore.

The Indianapolis, Ind., native was a second-team All-State selection as a senior at Lawrence North, where he averaged 12.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and two blocks per game.

Because he sat out this season with a knee injury, he could apply for a medical waiver from the NCAA.

The most important development from this situation, though, is that the scholarship problem that coach Rick Pitino had is now fixed.

On Monday, the Cardinals secured the signature of former Virginia Tech commit Montrezl Harrell, a 6-7, 225-pound forward from Hargrave Military Academy (Va.).

With Van Treese’s depature, Harrell will grab his scholarship, slide into the rotation, and could be a solid contributor in his first season with the Cardinals.

Harrell joins a strong frontcourt attack for Louisville, added to shot-blocker Gorgui Dieng and sophomore-to-be Chane Behanan.
