Coastal Carolina to host next three Big South tournaments

Coastal Carolina, which will open a new arena this coming season, received some good news from the Big South on Thursday as the league awarded the school the right to host the next three men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

The Student Recreation and Convocation Center is due to open in the fall, and the building is just one reason why their bid beat out three others for the right to host.

“We received four excellent bids to host our Basketball Championships,” said Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander in a press release

“This was not an easy decision for the CEOs. Ultimately they chose the bid from Myrtle Beach/Coastal Carolina, and we are looking forward to taking our marquee event to the Grand Strand for the next three years. We are also very appreciative of all the bids and interest we received.”

This move also represents a slight change in the format of the Big South tournament, apparently.

Prior to this season the first round would be played on the home floor of the higher-seeded teams with the regular season champion hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The highest-remaining seed would then host the title game.

It remains to be seen if Coastal Carolina would host the title game under this agreement, but one would think that the Big South would continue to award that game to the highest-remaining seed.

Coastal Carolina hosted in both 2010 and 2011 as they were the regular season champion both years but fell short of their goal of reaching the NCAA tournament.
