Charlotte has picked up a late addition to its 2012 recruiting class, adding graduate transfer JT Thompson from Virginia Tech, the school has announced.

Thompson has sat out the past two seasons with injuries, having worked back from major surgery on both knees. He last played in 2009-10, when he averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Hokies.

“We are excited to have JT join our team,” Charlotte coach Alan Major said in a statement. “He has experience, leadership skills and toughness and has competed at a high level.”

Thompson is reportedly working on the requirements for graduate school and is currently enrolled in summer classes.

His hometown of Monroe, N.C., is under 30 miles from Charlotte.

The 49ers finished last season with an overall record of 13-17, including 5-11 in the Atlantic 10. Leading scorer and rebounder Chris Braswell returns for his senior season in 2012-13, coming off a season in which he averaged 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds.

In addition to Thompson, Charlotte will be bringing in five other players from the Class of 2012, led by 6-7 forward Willie Clayton. Clayton recently won MVP of Georgia’s North-South All-Star game for the second year in a row.
