Minnesota upgrading facilities, outfitting Williams Arena with new scoreboards

In what has become a never-ending arms race to build the best facilities at the high-major Division I level, it is little surprise to see Minnesota trying to keep pace in the Big 10.

Thursday morning, the Gopher athletic department put out a release detailing upgrades to the Williams Arena and Mariucci Arena, among them upgrades to the arenas’ scoreboards and videoboards.

Both are on-campus facilities, with Mariucci home to the Minnesota hockey team, and Williams home to basketball.

“Golden Gopher fans are not only passionate about the athletic programs but also the facilities,” the school said in a release. “We understand the importance of game presentation as it pertains to each fan’s experience and with the addition of state-of-the-art scoreboards, ribbon boards and sound systems at both facilities our staff will be able to further enhance that experience.”

Minnesota finished 23-15 last season, including 6-12 in the Big Ten. As a 6-seed, the Gophers advanced all the way to the NIT title game, before losing to Stanford.

They recently received a bit of good news, as forward Trevor Mbakwe was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

In late November, Mbakwe had torn his ACL and was lost for the season. Prior to the injury, he was averaging 14.1 points and nine rebounds per game.
