Bruce Weber hires former Illinois guard Chester Frazier as assistant at Kansas State

Former Illinois guard Chester Frazier will follow his college coach, Bruce Weber, to Kansas State and join the Wildcat staff as an assistant, Frazier tweeted Thursday morning.

Frazier confirmed the news to multiple people who inquired about a previous tweet that seemed to report his move, including to former Missouri guard and fellow Baltimore native Kim English.

Frazier played under Weber for four seasons at Illinois from 2005-09, with his best performance coming during his sophomore year, when he averaged 7.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Following graduation, he played professionally overseas, and eventually joined Weber’s staff as a video coordinator.

Weber was fired in March after the Illini finished 17-15 and missed the NCAA tournament. He was then hired at Kansas State, set to replace Frank Martin, who left for South Carolina.

Frazier served as a video coordinator for one season under Weber at Illinois. In early 2011, he reflected on his time with the team to IlliniHQ.com.

“I still do get the urge to play sometimes, just for the competitiveness of it,” Frazier said. “I haven’t had an outlet to compete in a long time. I kind of miss it.”

“I’m pretty much a big brother for them,” he continued. “And not so much on the court. I’m trying to be a positive influence off the court. If these guys need someone to talk to, I’m there for them.”
