NC State’s Tyler Harris announces he will transfer

NC State’s Tyler Harris is transferring and has been granted his release, the Charlotte News Observer is reporting.

The news has been confirmed by the school.

Harris, a native of Long Island, N.Y., averaged 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds in just under seven minutes per game this past season. His best game of the year came in his first college game, when he scored eight points against UNC-Asheville.

“I am disappointed that my staff and I won’t have the opportunity to continue working with Tyler,” said head coach Mark Gottfried in a statement. “I wish him well in his future academic and athletic pursuits.”

The Wolfpack have three McDonald’s All-Americans coming in from the Class of 2012: guards Tyler Lewis and Rodney Purvis, as well as swingman TJ Warren.

There is still a chance that Philadelphia forward Amile Jefferson could end up with NC State.

Gottfried & Co. were a surprise in the 2011-12 season, sneaking into the NCAA tournament and making a run to the Sweet 16.

Before committing to NC State out of the Class of 2011, he was pursued by schools that include Providence, Iowa, and St. John’s.
