Bridgton Academy (Maine) guard Darrick Wood has recommitted to St. John’s, NBCSports.com has confirmed.

Wood has been on a visit this weekend at St. John’s campus in Queens, N.Y.

He originally committed to the Red Storm in August, but reopened his recruitment in January, as questions about the health of head coach Steve Lavin remained unanswered.

Now, though, Lavin has expressed his desire and readiness to return to the sidelines for the start of the 2012-13 season, after recovering from prostate cancer surgery in October of 2011.

Wood is a scoring-minded guard who played with St. John’s forward Amir Garrett early this past season at Bridgton, as Garrett worked his way to eligibility.

The Red Storm initially took notice of Wood while recruiting UCLA-bound Kyle Anderson. Both players competed with the New Jersey Playaz on the AAU circuit.

Questions have been raised about Wood’s ability to become academically eligible, but Bridgton coach Whit Lesure said his progress seemed to be “on track” in October. As time progresses, more information will come to light.

Wood will join high-scoring rising sophomore D’Angelo Harrison in the backcourt next season, along with Texas A&M transfer Jamal Branch, who becomes eligible to play when the second semester begins.
