John Calipari to play significant role in 2012 Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby is coming up on May 5, set to be broadcast on NBC, and reports are that there may be a special guest.

Rick Bozich of the Courier-Journal is reporting that Kentucky head coach John Calipari could be delivering the “Riders up!” command to jockeys at the beginning of the storied race.

Fresh off of a national championship with Kentucky, Calipari is riding the wave of media coverage and celebrity that comes with it.

He has been around the recruiting trail recently, as he tries to solidify his 2012 recruiting class and look forward to future classes.

This past weekend, he was in Pittsburgh watching 2013 Houston duo Andrew and Aaron Harrison. He is still awaiting the decision of 2012 Canadian native Anthony Bennett and perhaps that of 2012 Philadelphia forward Amile Jefferson.

NBC’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby begins May 5 at 11 a.m. on the NBC Sports Network, then switches to NBC at 4 p.m.
