Baylor has averted a major problem in the past few weeks, satisfying the NCAA’s investigation of alleged impermissible phones by self-imposing penalties and avoiding any further punishment.
With questions about possible sanctions out of the way Monday, Ricardo Gathers, the prized Top 30 forward from LaPlace, Louisiana, stuck with the program and signed his letter of intent to play for Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears.
Gathers committed to St. John’s over the summer, but decommitted and now ends up in Waco.
He is a well-built, 6-7, 240-pound presence on the interior and one of the best rebounders in the Class of 2012.
On the year for Riverside Academy (La.), Gathers averaged 18.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per game for a team that finished 27-10.
Gathers joins a talented Baylor recruiting class, headed by Top 5 prospect, 7-footer Isaiah Austin. Scott Drew is also bringing in shooting guard LJ Rose and more size in 6-9 forward Chad Rykhoek.
Quincy Miller, who averaged 11.1 points and five rebounds in his freshman season, will be returning for his sophomore year, which gives Baylor some experience and scoring ability in the starting lineup.
Point guard Pierre Jackson will also be back to orchestrate the offense, coming off a strong 13-point, almost six-assist per game season in 2011-12.
