Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said at the end of March that he thought freshman wing Branden Dawson would fully recover from his torn ACL and be ready for next season.

But I’m not sure he expected this.

The wing tweeted Sunday that his doctor says recovery from his injury is two months ahead of schedule, meaning he’ll be more than ready for the start of fall practice in October.

The 6-6 freshman tore it during the regular-season finale against Ohio State, costing the Spartans one of their most athletic, aggressive players. Dawson started most of the season and averaged 8.5 points and 4.6 rebounds a game and was particularly effective at crashing the offensive glass.

It’ll be interesting to see if he retains that explosiveness and if he’s able to develop his game. Dawson’s shot needs work, as does his ball-handling. But there’s no doubt the Spartans will be happy to have him back.
