Report: Dominic Cheek leaving Villanova, will declare for NBA draft

DominicCheekVillanova

According to Terry Toohey of the Delaware County Daily Times and confirmed by other outlets, Villanova’s Dominic Cheek will forego his senior season at Villanova and enter the NBA draft.

The 6-6, 185-pound junior from Jersey City, N.J., averaged 12.5 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Wildcats in 2011-12 for a Villanova team that went 13-19 overall and 5-13 in the Big East.

He is projected by scouting services to be selected in the second round or go undrafted.

Keep in mind that, because the NCAA’s April 10 early-entry deadline has passed, Cheek can no longer return to college and must be committed to the draft.

Teammate Maalik Wayns has also left for the NBA draft, meaning two key juniors that the Wildcats expected to have back next season will be going pro instead.

According to Philly.com, sources say that financial difficulties within Cheek’s family could have been a driving force behind his decision.

Villanova will return one starting senior next season, Mouphtaou Yarou, and surround him with returners James Bell and JayVaughn Pinkston.

Jay Wright and the Wildcats are hoping to land some more signatures in the spring signing period and are waiting on the decision of Amile Jefferson, who is set to choose between Villanova, NC State, and Duke, with Kentucky perhaps in the mix as well.
