According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, current New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies was to interview for the vacant head coaching position at Colorado State on Friday.

While NMSU athletic director McKinley Boston said that he was unaware of an interview taking place when reached by the paper, he did acknowledge that Colorado State requested permission to speak with Menzies earlier this week.

“I know that I gave [Colorado State] permission to interview him if he wanted to,” Boston said to the Sun-News.

A possible move to Fort Collins would likely mean a raise in pay for Menzies, who made $340,000 last season at New Mexico State.

Tim Miles, who left Colorado State to take the job at Nebraska, was paid $585,000 last season.

Menzies has posted a 102-68 record in five seasons at New Mexico State, leading the Aggies to 26 wins and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2011-12. New Mexico State lost to Indiana in the round of 64.

On paper what would await Menzies or anyone else at Colorado State is a team with enough talent to contend with San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico atop the Mountain West.

Guards Jesse Carr, Wes Eikmeier and Dorian Green all return, as do forwards Pierce Hornung and Greg Smith. Transfers Daniel Bejarano (Arizona) and Colton Iverson (Minnesota) also figure to play prominent roles in the rotation.

Menzies’ interview comes just two days after Southern Miss head coach Larry Eustachy reportedly spoke with Colorado State about the opening.
