Sam Cassell Jr. reportedly no longer (and was not) committed to Maryland

Just one week after reportedly committing to Mark Turgeon’s program at Maryland, Adam Finkelstein of ESPN is reporting that the post-grad guard Sam Cassell Jr. is still on the market and ready to set his visits before making a final decision.

As one could deduce, Cassell is the son of former NBA guard and current Washington Wizards assistant coach Sam Cassell, who averaged nearly 16 points and six assists in his career with eight different teams.

It was reported last Sunday that Cassell Jr., a native of Baltimore, Md., had committed to Maryland, but the elder Cassell told CSNWashington.com that the report was “false.”

The younger Cassell is drawing interest from schools including South Florida, Florida State, and Villanova. He is reportedly slated to visit both USF and FSU.

Cassell is a 6-4 guard from Notre Dame Prep (Md.) who previously committed to Maryland in October of 2011. If he does end up with the Terrapins, he would be the sixth member of the 2012 class, joining headliners Shaquille Cleare of Texas and Jake Layman of Massachusetts.

The Terrapins finished the 2011-12 season with a 17-15 record, including 6-10 in the ACC. Maryland is hoping that top scorer Terrell Stoglin will return next season, after he led the ACC in scoring, putting up nearly 22 points per game. A report surfaced that he would ‘test the NBA waters,’ but likely return to Maryland.
