According to a report from Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, Canisius will introduce former Rhode Island head coach Jim Baron as their new head coach early this week.

Baron, who was fired following a 7-24 seasons at URI, replaces Tom Parrotta.

Parrotta went 64-121 in six seasons at Canisius, which included a 5-25 campaign in 2011-12, and the Golden Griffins were just 31-81 in MAAC play during that period.

Baron went 183-167 in 11 seasons at Rhode Island, including 20 or more wins in four seasons prior to 2011-12, and he’s won 389 games for his career.

Baron’s also been a head coach at St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis (PA).

One major problem for Canisius in 2011-12 was the health of guard Gaby Belardo, who dealt with a back injury for much of the season. He’s due back, as are guards Alshwan Hymes and Harold Washington.
