Report: Pacific to the WCC for 2013-’14

According to a report, Pacific will be jumping from the Big West to become the 10th member of the WCC for the 2013-2014 season.

This would be a perfect fit on both sides. Pacific is currently the only private university in the Big West, whereas all nine current members of the WCC are private schools with BYU the only member with a five-figure enrollment.

The fit makes sense from a basketball standpoint as well. The Pacific basketball program is solid. They won the Big West regular season title three times since 2005 and made three straight NCAA tournaments from 2004-06. In that stretch, the Tigers also managed to advance to the Round of 32 on two different occasions.

Pacific is probably best known for for No. 1 overall draft pick Michael Olowokandi, who will likely go down as one of the biggest busts in NBA history.

Adding Pacific not only gets the WCC to ten members, it will strengthen what may be the best mid-major conference in the country. The league sent three teams to the NCAA tournament this season, the second time in five years that they have done so, and have seen schools like Loyola Marymount, Portland, San Francisco and Santa Clara make themselves relevant in recent seasons.
