Cards vs. ‘Cats ‘Battle for New Orleans’ anthem

spt-120326-screengrab

Mike Miller

Fan anthems are a common occurrence in college sports. You know this, I know this, we all know this.

With the Final Four field finally being set, it was just a matter of time before a fan anthem was created and uploaded to YouTube. The first submission will certainly set the tone for rest of the fan-created anthems. But unlike the typical fan anthems, you know, the poorly produced renditions of regurgitated radio rap, this one is uniquely unique.

You see, Mickey Clark isn’t just any fan. He’s a singer/songwriter from Louisville, and is a long-time Louisville Cardinal fan and booster. He played college basketball at St. Joseph’s College in Indiana then returned home to pursue a musical career.

When the Cardinals made the 1981 Final Four, also held in New Orleans, he put his talents to use, creating “The Battle for New Orleans”.

Since 1982, Clark has created three songs in honor of the Cardinals, and with his team set to face in-state rivals Kentucky in New Orleans, he went back to work.

You don’t have to be a country fan to appreciate this song. Any time you can slip “Gorgui kept a’ blockin’” into a song, it has to be considered a success.

It’s not every week that such a deeply rooted rivalry takes place on such a national stage. If this opening salvo is any indication of what we are in store for this week, I’d sit back and enjoy.

The entire lyrics to the song can be found here.
