HARLEM, NY--Hoop Group hosted the next in its series of Top 100 instructional clinics on Sunday afternoon in New York City.
Here is a review of some high- and mid-major talent that competed.
Melvin Johnson | Guard | Class of 2012 | St. Benedict’s (NJ) | Signed to Miami
Johnson (pictured) is a scorer at heart and is signed to play for Jim Larranaga at Miami next season. At St. Benedict’s Prep this season, Johnson averaged over 20 points per game. His coach calls him the second-best guard he has ever coached, behind former Duke star Jay Williams.
Josh Brown | Guard | Class of 2013 | St. Anthony (NJ) | Verbal to Temple
In the fall, Brown committed to Temple, which he calls his “dream school.” Playing for coach Bob Hurley at famed St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, NJ, the point guard is seasoned, with a good handle and high-major body frame. The most important thing is, he still has another year to mature before heading to college.
Carlos Galan | Guard | Class of 2013 | Gompers (NY) | Undecided
Galan is a 6-1 guard and, first and foremost, an aggressive scorer. He is originally from the Dominican Republic and is still learning English. He has flown under the radar for much of his career, but teams including St. John’s and Iowa State have watched him play this season.
Hallice Cooke | Guard | Class of 2013 | St. Anthony (NJ) | Undecided
Cooke is a mid-major guard who comes from the same outstanding tutelage as Brown. He holds offers from Seton Hall, South Florida, and Virginia Commonwealth, with interest from schools that include Richmond and Iona. Having learned some things from Kyle Anderson, the 6-8 guard headed to UCLA, Cooke will have benefited.
