VCU won’t be only CAA team in NCAAs next year

The Colonial Athletic Association featured five teams – VCU, Drexel, Georgia State, George Mason and Old Dominion – who ranked among the top 100 teams in kenpom.com’s rankings. That’s similar to what the Missouri Valley and Conference USA did this season.

But the CAA should be even better next season. And certainly place more than just one team in the NCAA tournament.

This story by StarNews writer Brian Mull breaks down the returning players for each of the league’s teams and how crucial those players were to the 2011-12 season. Teams like Drexel and VCU lose stars, but they return essentially everyone else.

Per his figures, 10 CAA schools return at least six rotation players; nine bring back those who played the majority of minutes and seven return the bulk of their scorers. (There’s a full chart here.)

Now, returning the bulk of a roster doesn’t always guarantee success. (See: UConn and Arizona this year.) But it sure helps.
