The hero’s welcome that coach Mark Gottfried and his NC State Wolfpack received as they returned to campus Sunday night was much different than the response that greeted him upon his hiring.
For a team that looked NIT-bound through long stretches of the season, the Wolfpack are headed to the Sweet 16 and are one of the more dangerous matchups left in the tournament.
The fall signing period was good to Gottfried, who roped in three Top 100 signees. With that in mind, a trip to the NIT seemed sufficient, considering what the future looks to be holding.
But it’s not just celebration. Gottfried is getting cash incentives for his team’s success. He reportedly made $1.5 million for making the NCAA tournament, plus $62,500 for beating Georgetown.
