Bobby Cremins is calling it a career as a coach for a second time.
He announced Monday he’ll step down as the College of Charleston coach. Cremins spent the last six years with Charleston, posting four 20-win seasons in that time, but never could get the Cougars into the NCAA tournament. He was 109-56 during his tenure.
Cremins, 64, announced on Jan. 27 that he would miss the rest of Charleston’s season. He later said he was physically exhausted.
“It was unfortunate what happened to me in late January. I didn’t like what happened and I’ll never know why,” Cremins said. “Our bodies sometimes send us signals, so we have to listen. The silver lining is that my staff, led by Mark Byington, my team, my school, they had my back and they responded in a special way.”
Cremins also spent 19 years coaching at Georgia Tech, where he was 354-237. The Yellow Jackets went to the 1990 Final Four and won three ACC tournament titles under Cremins. He retired from Tech in 2000.
His coaching career also included six years at Appalachian State.
