Southern Miss band chant #fail: ‘Where’s your green card?’

Southern Miss lost Thursday’s NCAA tournament game, while its band lost some respect.

During a 70-64 loss to Kansas State, some members of the band could be heard chanting “Where’s your green card?” toward Wildcats guard Angel Rodriguez.

Students occasionally yell or do things that are in poor taste when watching basketball. What’s classic about this is that Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico. For anyone who didn’t pass that class, that makes him a U.S. citizen.

The chant was short lived, but did get caught on video. Listen carefully:

Southern Miss President Martha Saunders later issued a statement:

“We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game,” Saunders said. “The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.”
