Mike Brey: ‘other BCS leagues are very pissed off’ Big East got 9 bids

There’s a reason Notre Dame coach Mike Brey told SportsTalk that he’s never had a “more gratifying year.”

The Irish lost Big East player of the year Ben Hansbrough and starter Tyrone Nash from last year’s 27-7 team, then endured this season without sharpshooting forward Tim Abromaitis, who tore his ACL after just two games. Yet here they are, a No. 7 seed in the tournament after finishing third in the Big East.

Yet … if Notre Dame was 22-11 and finished third in the conference, does that mean the Big East was down? No way, he told SportsTalk. Not with nine teams in the NCAA tournament.

“Or league continues to be, year in and year out, the toughest one. I love the fact that we’re getting nine bids,” he said. “Quite frankly, the other BCS leagues are very pissed off we’re getting nine bids.”

Nine of 16 is pretty good. I should note that the Big Ten landed six (half of its league) and six of 10 Big 12 teams made the field.
