After six seasons – five of which were losing campaigns – Central Michigan fired coach Ernie Zeigler on Wednesday.

Zeigler was 75-111 during his tenure, which ended with two consecutive 20-loss seasons. His best year was the 2009-10 season in which Central Michigan was 15-15 and finished second in the MAC’s West division.

“After a thorough review of the program, a chance in leadership is needed in order to improve the overall performance of the program,” athletic director Dave Heeke said. “I appreciate Coach Zeigler’s commitment to Central Michigan University and his hard work on and off the court. We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”

Zeigler’s son, Trey, a 6-5 sophomore, is the team’s leading scorer and made headlines when he committed to play for his dad. When he learned of the firing, he tweeted: “It’s been real.” (The tweet has since been removed.)

No word if he intends on staying at Central Michigan.
