North Carolina ‘hopeful’ John Henson can play Friday

Syracuse isn’t the only No. 1 seed with personnel issues. North Carolina forward John  Henson is still recovering from a sprained left wrist and may not play in Friday’s NCAA tournament opener.

The Midwest’s No. 1 seed plays the winner of the Vermont-Lamar game that night.

Henson, a 6-10 forward who’s the team’s leading rebounder, one of the nation’s best shot-blockers and the ACC defensive player of the year, hurt his wrist during the Heels’ ACC tournament quarterfinal win against Maryland last Friday. He missed the next two games including their loss Sunday to Florida State.

The wrist is strong enough for normal activities, but coach Roy Williams is showing caution.

“If I had to guess, if the game were today, he still would not play,” Williams told the Fayette Observer. “But I’m hopeful that he will by Friday.”

He’ll reassess Henson’s status on Thursday.
