Bruiser Flint’s lament: NCAA ‘didn’t let us’ play in ‘their tournament’

Drexel won the CAA’s regular-season title, then lost its first game since Jan. 2 – 19 consecutive wins – in the tournament championship to VCU.

But the Dragons (27-6 overall, an RPI of 66) didn’t make the cut in the NCAA tournament’s 68-team field.

“We wanted to play in their tournament,” coach Bruiser Flint said on Sunday. “They didn’t let us.”

Flint probably saw this coming. He sounded worried when asked about the Dragons’ chances last week, which turned out to be for good reason. Their RPI trailed Nevada, Oregon and Northwestern, while the wretched strength of schedule (among D-I’s bottom third) and lack of marquee wins (VCU? Cleveland State) just weren’t enough.

“I guess we’ve got to play some tougher games, whether we win them or lose them,” Flint said. “I guess that’s what they’re telling me. No matter whether you win or lose, just put someone on the schedule who has a decent RPI.”
