The demise of Rumeal Robinson, one of Michigan’s heroes during its run to the 1989 NCAA tournament title, isn’t anything new.

It’s been almost three years since he was arrested by the FBI and charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank bribery, false statement to a financial institution and wire fraud. It wasn’t long after that news emerged that he finagled his foster mother out of her home because of business dealings that got out of hand.

Well, his foster mother, Helen Ford, now lives in a one-bedroom apartment and works as a security and safety specialist for the Cambridge elementary schools, devoted to helping troubled kids.

And she still has a place in her heart for Robinson.

This touching read from ESPN The Magazine details their relationship, how it evolved over the years and what happened that got Robinson in so much hot water. It’s long, but compelling. Give it a read during halftime.

Then go give your mom a hug.
