Another regular season conference champion has been picked off.
Savannah State, the outright champions of the MEAC, got dropped in their first round game against Hampton. Christopher Tolson scored 16 points to lead the way for the Pirates, who used an 11-2 run to blow the game open down the stretch.
Savannah State had won their last 13 games to win the league title, but with the Tigers out of the tournament the door is open for Norfolk State and Delaware State, two of the most talented teams in the conference. And while we’re on the topic, keep an eye on North Carolina Central. They have Big 12 transfers Ray Willis and Dominique Sutton on the roster.
But that’s not actually the story of this game, if you believe the AP write up. The real story? That Savannah State had a streak of 18 consecutive games scoring 50 points or more snapped.
Seriously.
I actually enjoy MEAC hoops more than most, but since when is scoring 50 points an accomplishment? I don’t even think Big Ten teams would be proud of that.
