Recruiting rundown: Is Kansas on verge of blockbuster class?

The news that 6-3 shooting guard Allerik Freeman of Olympic (N.C.), a nationally top-25 ranked player in the junior class, has narrowed his college list to two remaining selections came out last week, and the clubhouse favorite to land his college services, Kansas, could be on the verge of a dynamite 2013 recruiting class.

Freeman’s recruitment will come down to the Jayhawks or Villanova. Kansas has long been considered a leader to land Freeman, making it no surprise that they are on his final list.

After what will likely end up as a top-25 national recruiting class this season, the 2013 Kansas class has the makings of what can be a special group. The current duo of 6-1 guard Conner Frankamp, an in-state guard, and Georgia wing Brannen Greene, would be a class that many schools could hang their hat on, but all indications are that Kansas is far from done.

The already in place building blocks of a savvy USA Basketball U-16 team member in Frankamp, and a lengthy scoring wing in Greene could be joined by a physically dominant shooting guard in Freeman. Additionally, Kansas is also on the list for top-10 national prospects in the 2013 class, 6-9 power forwards Julius Randle of Prestonwood Christian (Texas) and Chris Walker of Holmes County (Fla.). The early thought is that it will be hard to keep Randle away from North Carolina or Duke, but the Jayhawks have been prominently mentioned for Walker.

Should coach Bill Self and his assistants pair Freeman, and either Walker or Randle with Frankamp and Greene, the Jayhawks would have no less than a top-5 recruiting class in the nation for the 2013 class, with a group that could possibly end up higher. The early momentum of three blue chip prospects could be enough to turn the tide on a potential center piece in Walker or Randle.

Still, it is not a foregone conclusion that Freeman will end up at Kansas, but they certainly have to like their chances. He could be yet another domino falling in Kansas’ favor in what could shape up to be an elite group.
