Virginia loses freshman Malcolm Brogdon for season

If Virginia wants to avoid an early exit from the ACC tournament – and the worries that would accompany that loss on Selection Sunday – it’ll have to do it without freshman Malcolm Brogdon.

The school announced Tuesday that the 6-5 wing will miss the rest of the season because of a broken bone in his foot.

Brogdon started just one game for the Cavs, but plays as often as sophomore forward Akil Mitchell, while his averages (6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds) are fifth best on the team. It’s not a crucial loss, but it won’t help.

Virginia (22-8) is primed for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but not winning a game in the ACC tournament would hurt. The Cavs are 5-5 in their last 10 games

They open the tourney with the N.C. State-Boston College winner on Friday at 2 p.m. ET.
