Winthrop fired coach Randy Peele Monday after five seasons with the school.

Peele was 77-82 during his five seasons.

Peele, who replaced Gregg Marshall after he left for Wichita State in 2007, won Big South tournament titles in 2008 and 2010. But back-to-back losing seasons – the Eagles were 12-20 this season -- for the first time in more than a decade weren’t good enough for the school.

“We are certainly very appreciative of the hard work and dedication shown by Coach Peele on behalf of this university over the past nine years, first as an assistant and then as head coach of our men’s basketball program,” Winthrop athletic director Tom Hickman said in a statement.
