NCAA rules Miami’s Reggie Johnson ineligible

If Miami makes a push for the NCAA tournament, it may not have beefy center Reggie Johnson to  help.

The NCAA declared the junior ineligible due to impermissible benefits. He won’t play tonight vs. Florida State. The rest of the season is in question while the school seeks his immediate reinstatement.

It released this statement.

“In the process of the ongoing joint NCAA-UM inquiry, it was discovered that members of Johnson’s family received impermissible travel benefits from a member of the former basketball coaching staff.”

“Johnson was unaware of the benefits and his family was told they were permissible by that member of the former basketball coaching staff.”

Johnson, a 6-10, 284-pound center and avowed WWE fan, averages 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and is always a tough defensive assignment due to his size and skill.

The Hurricanes (16-10, 7-6 in ACC) are 11-6 with Johnson in the lineup. He missed the first nine games while recovering from injury. Without him, their chances for dancing are slim.
