Wanna see some scoring stars? Watch the Summit League

The Summit League’s been around since 1982, but it was known as the Associated of Mid-Continent Universities, then simply the Mid-Continent back then. It changed to the Summit in 2007.

That could be why the league has some trouble gaining national attention. Because it isn’t for lack of scoring stars.

Five of the top 14 individual scorers play in the Summit, including Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton, who recently snagged the top spot. Weber State’s Damian Lillard had led D-I most of the season, but his recent ridiculous run of 37, 18, 40, 31, 30 and 34 points tops everyone,

He now averages 25.1 ppg., just ahead of Lillard’s 24.5. Behind him are South Dakota State’s Nate Wolters (6th), IUPUI’s Alex Young (9th), IPFW’s Frank Gaines (10th) and Oral Roberts’’ Dominque Morrison (14th).

So how did all these stars land in Summit? College Hoops Haven did a fantastic post on the league, those players and their individual backgrounds.

Here’s an excerpt:

Alex Young was named the 2008 Indianapolis City and Indianapolis Public Schools Player of the Year as a senior at Northwest High School. He averaged 18.6 points and 13.7 rebounds in his final season. The choice of where to go to school was easy for the Indianapolis native.

He chose to attend Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis because he says, “So my family can still come to the games also IUPUI was the school that recruited me the most heavily and also I could play immediately here.”

Play immediately he did, seeing action in 30 games (21 starts) in his freshman year which saw him lead all Summit League freshmen in scoring with a 10.8 average. His sophomore season his production jumped up to 18.3 points per game, but also saw him grab 4.5 rebounds a contest.

What changed for Alex? After his freshman year he, “realized how the college game went, just overall confidence and believing in my ability.”

If you’re hoping to see any of these guys in March, Morrison or Wolters are the best bets. They lead the league’s two best teams. Though I wouldn’t put it past Hamilton to go off during the conference tournament. He’s been to the last two NCAA tournaments and will undoubtedly be dying to reach a third.
