Panic time? San Diego St. drops its third game in a row

One week ago today, No. 13 San Diego State was on their way to the Thomas and Mack Center to take on UNLV with a chance to solidify their standing at the top of the Mountain West standings.

But after a 58-56 loss to Air Force -- a team that had just two league wins coming in and is dealing with a midseason coaching change -- the Aztecs are now on a three game losing streak and now find themselves tied for second in in the league a full two games behind New Mexico, who beat UNLV in Albuquerque today.

Playing without leading scorer and rebounder Jamaal Franklin, the Aztecs couldn’t find a rhythm offensively and had no answer for Michael Lyons, who finished with 27 points for the Falcons. Despite all of that, if Xavier Thames had gotten a three at the buzzer to go down, they would have left Colorado Springs with a win.

The question that we have to ask now is whether or not this Aztec team is as good as we thought. Their perimeter attack is strong, that cannot be questioned, but rebounding and interior size has been, and will continue to be, an issue. They’ll get a chance to make a statement next week. Both Wyoming and Colorado State, two borderline bubble teams, will be visiting Viejas Arena.

Now would be a good time to right the ship.
