Arizona ‘not optimistic’ Jordin Mayes will play this weekend

Arizona’s been using a seven-man rotation lately. Not that it’s affected the Wildcats’ play.

Regulars Jordin Mayes and Kevin Parrom have missed most of the last four games (Parrom all of them, Mayes the last three), but they’ve been four Wildcat wins, including a sweep of the Bay Area schools.

But if Arizona (18-8, 9-4) wants to stay in the Pac-12 race, it’ll need that seven-man rotation to keep working. Mayes has a stress reaction in his right foot and won’t play Thursday at Washington State. And maybe not at Washington, either.

From the Tucson Citizen:

“He’s progressing, but I’m not optimistic that he will play this weekend,” [coach Sean] Miller said at his weekly news conference.

“There is a side chance that he could, but we’re going to wait until he’s pain free so we don’t put him at further risk. He’s made progress. He’s in a much better place right now than he once was, but I don’t know if that is going to allow him to be with us this weekend.

“Maybe he can play a little bit Saturday.”

Saturday would be the biggie. Mayes, a 6-2 sophomore, is the back-up point guard and would be an asset against the fleet Huskies, who are tied with Cal atop the league at 10-3. He’s not essential (freshman Josiah Turner and Nick Johnson can handle PG duties), but another ball-handler never hurts vs. Washington.
