Is it time to shake up the MAC?
A tweet from @zibby42 Saturday alerted me to this factoid: Teams from the Mid-American’s East division swept all 12 games from the West division this week. On the season, the East is 21-3 vs. the West.
Holy Toledo! How does this kind of thing happen? Here’s a quick take.
The MAC has three really solid teams in Akron, Buffalo and Ohio, not to mention perennial power Kent State (the Golden Flashes are headed for yet another 20-win season). All four are way, way above what the West has to offer. All of ‘em are 3-0 vs. West teams.
So there’s huge head start right there.
Bowling Green’s probably better than its 10-11 record would indicate given it beat Temple this season. It’s only West loss is to Eastern Michigan, the team currently atop the standings.
That leaves Miami (Ohio) as the worst team in the East. But even at 6-14 and 2-6 in conference, I don’t think Charlie Coles’ team is ever an easy out. Just how it goes.
The gap is strange – Akron hammered Eastern Michigan on Saturday, showing how far apart the divison leaders are – but I’m guessing it won’t be quite so pronounced by season’s end. It won’t be close thanks to the top four in the East, but 21-3 might be as good as it gets. .
