Snapping a 41-game losing streak ‘a blessing’ for Towson

What’s it like ending a 41-game losing streak?

“Unreal.”

And I’m sure Marcus Damas is understating it.

Towson’s sophomore forward says his teammates never stopped working hard or believing they could win, despite the longest losing streak in D-I history. After a 66-61 win against UNC-Wilmington on Saturday, Damas and his can finally enjoy themselves.

“Coming to Towson, we knew it was going to be hard,” Damas told Jeff Eisenberg of The Dagger. “We didn’t think it would be this bad, but nobody stopped believing. The competition just got hotter in practice. Nobody stopped trying liking a loser. Everybody just kept believing.

“To finally win today, it’s a lot off our shoulders. It’s a blessing.”

UNC-Wilmington (8-13) is hardly a powerhouse, but when you haven’t won since Dec. 29, 2010, you revel every W. Especially when it was in a game that seemed to have an awfully familiar storyline.

Towson (1-22) had trailed until Damas scored five straight in the second half for a 41-38 lead. When the Seahawks tied it at 52, Damas helped spark another run. But Towson still had to sweat out some Seahawks misses at the free-throw line before they could exhale. It’s been a tough road for Towson and coach Pat Skeery, but now they can just can focus on improving, rather than wondering if this game would finally be “the one.”

“After all this work, we finally did it. It was a big relief,” Damas said.
