You ever heard of the NCCAA?
No, that’s not a typo. The NCCAA — or National Christian Colleges Athletic Association — is an actual entity. On their website, they say that the “very existence of the NCCAA speaks to the need of a different game plan for college athletics in the midst of an era when the very foundations of our society are being eroded morally” and that they want “to step into the gap and become a vehicle for implementing a positive and purposeful athletic experience in cooperation with member institutions and their student-athletes.”
Positive and purposeful, huh?
Than maybe they should keep their member institutions from playing against Division I programs, because I don’t see what is positive or purposeful about the 141-39 drubbing that Toccoa Falls, a NCCAA member, took against Western Carolina on Tuesday night.
Now, I don’t support running up the score per se, but I don’t have necessarily have an issue with it, especially at this level. The score of this game was 72-17 at the half. Are you really going to tell the kids at the end of the WCU bench that they can’t play hard in the one game they are going to play a lot of minutes? Are you really going to ask the player’s on your team to turn off their motor because the team they’re playing isn’t good enough?
The issue here is simply that this game took place. I understand that its difficult for a team like Western Carolina to fill their schedule. I do. But the Carolinas are home to quite a few quality Division III programs and the south in general is loaded with powerhouse programs at the Division II, Division III and NAIA level.
Couldn’t you schedule one of those teams instead of Toccoa Falls?
Western Carolina is a mediocre team in the SoCon. Kenpom as them as the 238th best team in the country with the 271st most efficient offense playing at a pace of 66.7 possessions per game, which puts them smack in the middle nationally.
In other words, this is not a very good team that doesn’t generally score a lot of points.
And they scored 141 points against Toccoa Falls and beat them by 102!
Seriously, why are they playing this game? What could they possibly get out of it other than an injury? And its the middle of January?
The Catamounts would have been better off if they just sold tickets to an intrasquad scrimmage.
