Monday’s slate and what to watch

Mike Miller

There’s this “title game” on tonight where a bunch of computer and voters decided who would play in it. OK, it’s not like they placed two random teams, but you get the point.

It ain’t March Madness.

Is it a fairer way to determine a champ than a single-elimination tournament in which a team has to win six games (though some have to win seven now)? Maybe. But it sure isn’t as much fun. So if you want to watch that tonight, be my guest. I’ll be sticking to the Big East and Big 12 – on the court.

(All times ET; TV info from HD SportsGuide.com)

West Virginia at Connecticut, 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
UConn can’t wait to get home. The Huskies (12-3) have dropped two straight on the road, both to unranked teams. Even Jim Calhoun’s return from a short suspension couldn’t stop Saturday’s setback at Rutgers. But even the comfy conditions at Gampel won’t ensure a win against the Mountaineers (12-4) who play their usual tough, brutal Brand of hoops. Also helps to have Kevin Jones making a run at Big East player of the year.

Cincinnati at Georgetown, 9 p.m. (ESPNU)
The Bearcats (12-4) lost Saturday, the first time with their revamped four-guard lineup. It’s unclear if coach Mick Cronin will make any changes, or just hope his guys don’t go ice cold again. That’s a dangerous game to play against the Hoyas (13-2), one of the nation’s most efficient scoring teams – who also play some pretty fair defense.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State, 7 p.m. (ESPNU)
A little bedlam spices up any Monday. It’d be nice if either the Sooners (10-4) or Cowboys (8-7) were playing a little better, though. It’ll almost certainly make for a close game. Just not sure it’ll be a good one. Maybe the BCS game is worth monitoring.
